The intrinsic character of Edzard’s photography, besides his keen sense for the right moment and an unerring intuition for fine details, is marked by his natural ability to quickly connect with the people he meets and shoots. His self-indulgent urge to unveil the true beauty of life and essence of human nature made him a wanderer between the worlds. Naturally and with ease he moves between continents and cultures, vanguard movements and folkways, celebrated top models and regular people of all ages, seamlessly merging with his object. By surrendering to the magic of the very moment, he is allowed access to the inner world of his models, enabling him and his camera to catch an inside glimpse of genuineness and unfeigned emotions.

Born in a small town in the north of Germany, Edzard took an early start into photography at the age of 13. Looking for a way to preserve the precious moments while roaming the vast streets of suburbia with his skateboard, he picked up the families plastic point-and-shoot camera and started to document his life and that of his friends and family. Soon this form of visual expression was to become his favorite pastime. Followed up by formal education and training of photography in Hamburg and London, he also has studied Philosophy, History and Political Science.

Until 2001 he lived in London and worked for some of the UK’s leading lifestyle and music magazines. But driven by the longing for fresh inspirations and craving to explore new ways of visual expression, he left the UK to travel the world with his wife, spending extended periods in Asia, Oceania and the Americas. This opportunity he has used to further cultivate some of the spontaneous elements and techniques of documentary photography and combining them in a unique way with some of the classical features of traditional staging. The process has lead him to his very own and unconventional style of photography often taking the shape of a hard-edged hyper-reality.

Besides his work for various international clients and major brands like Amazon, Vodafone, Coca Cola, Levi’s, Lucky Strike or McDonald’s as well as for well-known magazines like ID, WAD, Milk, Vanity Fair, The Face or the New York based V-Magazine he is also regularly showing his work in galleries  and during exhibitions.
Today he is a sought after creative photographer with bases in Paris, Berlin and New York. If not commuting between Berlin and Paris or traveling on assignments through other parts of the world, he spends his spare time on his little ranch and studio at the countryside, just outside Berlin, with some dear friends or training his quarter horses.
